Adolescent Residential Treatment at Shepherd’s Hill Academy

Few things are harder than dealing with a troubled, rebellious adolescent, and few decisions are more heartbreaking than temporarily removing your child from your home. But there are times when residential treatment is the best solution for all involved—not only for your teenager but also for his or her parents and siblings.
We understand what a hard time this is for your family. With more than 20 years’ experience, we at Shepherd’s Hill Academy know how to help. We offer Christian-based adolescent residential treatment in Georgia, including a nature based program and an accredited private school. Our boarding school helps create a change of heart in troubled teens that promotes healthy, life-long behavioral changes.

The Benefits of Residential Treatment

There are many causes and issues surrounding teens who have behavioral problems. They may be angry and abusive at home, lashing out at family members or becoming violent with little provocation. They most likely are having problems in school, sometimes to the point of being suspended or expelled. Many have been diagnosed with a clinical behavioral disorder such as:

In all cases, they may have tried to self-medicate with alcohol, drugs, or sex—some to the point of addiction.
Residential treatment for troubled teens provides a safe environment and support structure where they are surrounded by professionals who sincerely care about helping each individual boy and girl work toward a positive outcome.
“Residential treatment is an intervention, not a destination,” says the ABT Associates research report for the National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health (NACBH) and National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS). “It is a level of care in an array of services that children and youth, with or at risk of emotional or behavioral disorders, need at a particular time given their histories, diagnoses, complexities of impairment, and living and learning situations. It is a critical component of a system of care that some children need in order to have the chance to recover and regain their functioning in daily lives in the community as productive participants at home and in school, safe and living with hope.”

Shepherd’s Hill Provides the Keys to Change

Removing the child from the environment in which the negative behavior occurs can be a key factor in recovery. “Residential treatment can help children and adolescents whose health is at risk while living in their community,” according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). “For example, therapeutic residential programs are helpful for youth that have not responded to outpatient treatments, who have educational needs that cannot be met in less restrictive settings or who are in need of further intensive treatment following inpatient psychiatric care.” Also critical to the success of a residential treatment program is the list of attributes that it offers, such as a comprehensive intake evaluation, individual and group therapy, and ways for parents to be involved, all of which Shepherd’s Hill Academy provides.
At Shepherd’s Hill Academy, we not only offer adolescent residential treatment, but also an outdoor therapeutic program that focuses on person-to-person mentoring along with spiritual and biblical counsel. Our programs intentionally use the outdoors and rustic living as an alternative to conventional adolescent residential treatment environments, removing modern distractions, simplifying choices, and rejuvenating each teen’s mind and critical thinking abilities.
