Shepherd’s Hill Academy has been serving families with teens in crisis since 2001. Over the years, we’ve established multiple ways we can help troubled teens who attend our therapeutic boarding school.

In that time, parents have found that we successfully address the most important areas in their teens’ lives. We focus on more than just their behavior and instead pay attention to their specific individual needs.

Shepherd’s Hill Academy’s holistic approach successfully provides parents with a therapeutic environment that will encompass the entire well-being of their teen. We focus on four strategies that encompass the essential needs of each student who walks through our doors.

Emotional

For teens to feel emotionally secure, they need a safe and nurturing environment when they can be comfortable. They’re looking for a place where they can trust those around them and feel their respect.

Independence is another key aspect of their emotional health that makes them feel more confident and at ease. At the same time, teens also need limits as they learn basic responsibilities and how to take care of themselves. There are high standards at Shepherd’s Hill that ensure the safety, health, and education of our students.

Emotional relationships are crucial to a young person’s mental growth. Teens want people they can speak to when they’re frustrated or upset. That is why everyone on our staff is trained to work well with the students and assist them as needed.

Our individualized therapeutic opportunities help meet the emotional need of every enrolled student. Family relations are restored with our family and group therapies.

In the end, our goal is to help teens be more self-aware, develop coping skills, manage their stress, and identify their purpose.

Physical

A study conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center says, “Teenagers need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on most days to maintain good health and fitness, and for healthy weight during growth. Physical activity should include aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and bone-strengthening exercises.”

At Shepherd’s Hill, students stay active with numerous extracurricular activities.

We offer equine therapy to teach them responsibility and how to care for another living being. They also get in exercise during their daily walk to campus from their outdoor therapeutic living environment.

A healthy diet is also introduced daily through three square meals on campus.

Spiritual

For a teenager to grow spiritually, they must understand their relationship with God and His Word.

On a weekly basis, we provide our students with opportunities to serve and care for others. As groups work toward a common goal, they’re able to develop connections and establish a love for helping people and animals.

We provide a Christ-centered authoritative environment that provides teens with the opportunity to understand the truth of God’s Word to enrich their soul and spirit.

Mental

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that, “Adolescence is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being.”

To promote the growth of their minds, we help our students adopt healthy sleep patterns. They’re also taught problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

Our digital-free environment, combined with our small class sizes, is designed to give students a second chance in their academic endeavors. It also helps rebuild the constructive and creative parts of the brain, which have often been neglected due to today’s digital age.
