October 6th through the 8th was a busy weekend for staff and students at Shepherds Hill Academy (SHA). Every Fall, Shepherds Hill Academy hosts a Parent Conference event for parents of current students in the Therapeutic program. This year, 2017, was no exception, as 36 parents representing 11 states made their way to the campus of SHA in Martin, Georgia.
Parent Conference weekend is full of events and activities that offer Therapeutic benefits to both parents and students at SHA. The conference also helps to enhance parent/child relationships, offering real-life application lessons to aid the student in lasting healing.
Conference weekend kicked off on Friday, October 6th with a dinner prepared by the SHA chef. Parents were able to network with staff and each other, encouraged by other parents dealing with teens in crisis situations. The evening proceeded with a session by SHA Founder/Director, Trace Embry, and concluded with bonfires on the boys’ and girls’ campuses for parents to reunite with their child for the weekend.
Day two featured additional sessions, including a hands-on Equine Therapy session led by the SHA equine therapist. The day concluded with dinner and a parenting round-table where parents were able to express their hopes, fears, successes and failures in a safe and therapeutic environment.
During the final day of Parent Conference, parents joined their children at church service, followed by lunch with their child. The weekend offered a time of healing and restoration for many relationships, as parents were able to see the personal progress their teens are making as they work through the SHA program.
