Getting Started on the Right Foot — Our Wilderness Program

The first phase of life at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, carefully planned to get rid of distractions, build trust and foster teamwork. Removing TV, cell phones and other conveniences gives teens an opportunity to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet simple daily needs calls for coping and teamwork abilities, pushing teens to consider their responsibility to others. As they watch staff and leaders who submit to God as the ultimate Authority, they learn a reference point for themselves and can better relate to authority and to others.

This next step gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and individual freedoms are restored. Careful coaching of parents in our retreats also happens during this phase in readiness for the teen’s return home.

During both phases of the program, the teens receive regular counseling and attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, taught by Georgia certified teachers.
