Getting Started on the Right Foot — Our Wilderness Program

The first phase of a stay at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, designed to eliminate distractions, build trust and foster teamwork. Being without electronics and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of collaborating to meet basic daily needs demands coping and teamwork abilities, giving teens good reason to consider their responsibility to others. As they watch staff and leaders who submit to God as the true Authority, they learn a reference point for themselves and can more appropriately relate to authority and to others.

This phase prepares them to transition into society as privileges and personal liberties are restored. Careful training of parents in our retreats also happens during this phase in readiness for the teen’s return home.

During both parts of the program, the teens receive regular counseling and are enrolled in our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, taught by Georgia certified teachers. We desire students to attend college, so we include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our ordinary curriculum.
