Getting Started on the Right Foot — Our Wilderness Program
The early part of a stay at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, carefully planned to get rid of distractions, build trust and foster teamwork. Living without technology and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet simple daily needs requires coping and teamwork abilities, compelling teens to consider their responsibility to others. As they watch staff and leaders who submit to God as the ultimate Authority, they find a reference point for themselves and can better relate to authority and to others.

After teens demonstrate responsible choices and take ownership of their growth, they transfer to the residential program and move to a home on campus. This next step prepares them to transition into society as privileges and individual freedoms are restored. Careful instruction of parents in our retreats also happens during this step in preparation for the teen’s going home.
During both parts of the program, the teens receive regular counseling and attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified instructors. We encourage students to attend college, so we incorporate test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our ordinary curriculum.
