Getting Started on the Right Foot — Our Wilderness Program
The early part of a stay at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, carefully planned to get rid of distractions, build trust and encourage teamwork. Being without electronics and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet basic daily needs calls for coping and teamwork skills, giving teens good reason to consider how their contribution impacts others. As they observe staff and leaders who submit to God as the true Authority, they learn a reference point for themselves and can more appropriately relate to authority and to others.

After a time, when teens display responsible decisions and take ownership of their development, they transition to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This next step prepares them to transition into society as privileges and personal freedoms are restored. Careful instruction of parents in our retreats also occurs during this period in preparation for the teen’s return home.
During both parts of the program, the teens receive regular counseling and attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified teachers. We encourage students to continue their studies in college, so we include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our daily curriculum.
