SHA is a Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program and a Boarding School, with a Christian Emphasis
Shepherd’s Hill Academy, located in northeast Georgia about 2 hours from Atlanta, combines the best aspects of a therapeutic wilderness program and a Christian boarding school with several forms of therapy, including counseling and equine therapy. Teens arrive at Shepherd’s Hill Academy from the east coast, south, midwest, western states and west coast, including from towns like Destin.
The Wilderness Program is the First Phase
The first phase of life at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, intended to remove distractions, build trust and encourage teamwork. Removing technology and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of cooperating to meet basic daily needs involves coping and teamwork strategies, pushing teens to consider how their contribution impacts others.
The Residential Program is Next
Once the teens in our care display responsible choices and take ownership of their growth, they shift to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This next step prepares them to transition into society as privileges and individual liberties are restored.
A Christian Boarding School Along with Therapy and Counseling
During both parts of the program, teens are enrolled in our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified instructors. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our daily curriculum.
Troubled teens are helped with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of a wilderness program, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family sessions for the adolescent.
Students who come to our school from all over the country, including Destin, Florida and enrollment is year-round. Call us at (706) 703-4188 or visit the rest of this site to learn more.

Originating as a small fishing village, it is now a popular tourist destination according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, over 80 percent of the Emerald Coast’s 4.5 million visitors each year visit Destin. The city styles itself “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, and claims to have the largest fishing vessel fleet in the state of Florida. The first condominiums were built in the 1970s, although Destin was not incorporated as a municipality until 1984. The city has experienced rapid growth since the 1980s. The city is located on a peninsula separating the Gulf of Mexico from Choctawhatchee Bay. The peninsula was originally an island; hurricanes and sea level changes gradually connected the island to the mainland. As of the 1940s it technically became an island again with the completion of the Choctawhatchee-west bay canal. Destin has a total area of 8.2 mi. 17.5 mi of it is land and 0.6 mi of it is water.
