Maybe you’ve been struggling with an angry or misbehaving teen in your family? Has your troubled teen been kicked out of school, or gotten into trouble with authorities? Do you fear for their safety? Shepherd’s Hill Academy believes that a change of heart due to a relationship with Jesus is the only true and lasting change. We provide a first-rate education, one-on-one mentoring and counseling, equine therapy, and teamwork exercises to help teens build character and learn to make responsible decisions.
A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program and a Boarding School, with a Christian Emphasis
Shepherd’s Hill Academy, located in northeast Georgia about 2 hours from Atlanta, is a blend of a therapeutic wilderness program and a Christian boarding school with several forms of therapy, including counseling and equine therapy. Teens arrive at Shepherd’s Hill Academy from the east coast, south, midwest, western states and west coast, including from towns like Decatur.
The Wilderness Program is the First Phase
The early part of life at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, designed to remove distractions, build trust and encourage teamwork. Removing technology and other conveniences allows teens to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of cooperating to meet simple daily needs requires coping and teamwork skills, pushing teens to consider their obligation to others.
The Residential Program is Next
After residents consistently make responsible decisions and take ownership of their growth, they shift to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This next step gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and individual freedoms are restored.

Like many southern cities in the early 19th century, Decatur’s early success was based upon its location along a river. Railroad routes and boating traffic pushed the city to the front of North Alabama’s economic atmosphere. The city rapidly grew into a large economic center within the Tennessee Valley and was a hub for travelers and cargo between Nashville/Chattanooga and Mobile/New Orleans. Throughout the 20th century, the city experienced steady growth, but was eclipsed as the regional economic center by a fast growing Huntsville during the space race. The city now finds its economy heavily based on manufacturing industries, cargo transit, and hi-tech industries such as General Electric, and the United Launch Alliance.
