SHA is a Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program and a Boarding School, with a Christian Emphasis
Shepherd’s Hill Academy, located in northeast Georgia about 2 hours from Atlanta, combines the best aspects of a therapeutic wilderness program and a Christian boarding school with several forms of therapy, including counseling and equine therapy. Teens come to Shepherd’s Hill Academy from the east coast, south, midwest, western states and west coast, including from towns like Colquitt.
The Wilderness Program is the First Phase
The early part of enrollment at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, intended to get rid of distractions, build trust and teach teamwork. Removing electricity and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet basic daily needs calls for coping and teamwork abilities, compelling teens to consider their obligation to others.
The Residential Program is Next
After a time, when teens display responsible decisions and take ownership of their development, they shift to the residential program and move to a home on campus. This phase gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and personal freedoms are restored.
A Christian Boarding School Along with Therapy and Counseling
During both parts of the program, teens are enrolled in our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified instructors. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also incorporate test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our regular curriculum.
Troubled youth are helped with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of wilderness therapy, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family counseling.
