Have you noticed that many young girls today do not keep diaries?
Is this really something to be concerned about? Perhaps so.
Until the year 2000, about half of the girls in America kept diaries.
It was a private way to log the events of their days, reflect on life, and contemplate their futures. There was security for a young girl knowing that her thoughts were recorded and locked up for her eyes only.
Today, only 5% of teen girls keep diaries. Social media has helped to replace deep thought with mere pictures and random writings.
Now, half of high school girls send inappropriate pictures of themselves into cyberspace.
If diaries are about living, social media is about performing. Let’s teach our kids to use social media as a tool for living – not as a weapon of performance.
