What age is appropriate to stop spanking a child?
This question tends to make the professionals run in the other direction. However, I want to do my best to provide a practical answer.
One reason many professionals sidestep this question is… because it is hard to answer a one dimensional question that requires a multifaceted answer.
First, nobody “wants” to spank their child–especially when Junior has a better mustache than Geraldo Rivera. If you “wanted” to spank your child, you are probably the guy that shouldn’t be doing it.
But, what parents must realize is that physical maturity doesn’t necessarily mean emotional maturity, and vice versa.
Only you, the parent, can know the appropriate time and circumstance for corporal discipline.
Being in tune with the Lord will be the greatest tool of discernment to determine this.
Here are two statements to remember:
- First: “Most parents err by starting too late and quitting too early.”
- Second: “The most effective spanking is OFTEN the one that isn’t given.”
