My time with teens at Shepherds Hill Academy gives me insight into how parents can make the simple things in life important.
I talked to a 15 year old girl the other day who claimed she’d never done laundry in her life.
In general, if there’s one area in our parenting experience we could immediately improve on, it would be allotting time to teach our kids practical things—things like how to do laundry.
But you shouldn’t stop there.
Teach your child to:
- Change oil in the car
- How to properly paint a room
- Shampoo a carpet
- Properly tend to the yard
The list is endless. The number of parents satisfied with letting Junior play video games, watch TV and surf the Net, while they either pay to have these things done or do them themselves, is astonishing!
And these are all relationship-building tasks that we can do with our kids—if we will commit to allow the time in our busy schedules.
