At Shepherds Hill Academy (SHA), safety is at the forefront of the program. When dealing with students, particularly in a residential setting, it is of utmost importance to maintain a staff that is fully trained and equipped for virtually any situation.
On August 14th, Shepherds Hill Academy conducted a full Safety and CPR training for the staff of the program. Team members in attendance fell into the categories of: new-hires, or those needing to renew their certifications.
The extensive one-day safety program was led by team member Nathaniel (Nate) Ether. As a former Residential staff member, Ether is familiar with the ins and outs of Shepherds Hill Academy and was able to incorporate real life application and situational scenarios into the training.
Ether is fully certified to perform the training and explains, “I am a certified American Red Cross Instructor. I am authorized to teach American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED/Blood-borne Pathogens and any one of those as stand-alone course.” Ether continues, “I was previously a Starguard Lifeguard Instructor with Starfish Aquatics Institute. I was an American Safety and Health Institute instructor certified to teach Professional Basic Life Support (First Aid/CPR/AED/Blood-borne Pathogens/Emergency Oxygen). I have been involved in the first responders industry of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED since 2007. I have also been certified in Handle With Care, and will be a Handle with Care Instructor in Spring of 2018.”
Four Shepherds Hill Academy staff members completed the training in August, learning skills and safety procedures to aid in the event of an emergency. Some of the topics covered in the training included: Checking an Injured or Ill Person before Giving Care, Cardiac Emergencies and CPR, using an AED, Choking, Sudden Illness, Injuries, and Environmental Emergencies.
Team members at Shepherds Hill Academy not only participate in medical and emergency trainings, but staff trainings as well in order to meet or exceed all state and local requirements. Safety remains a year-round topic, placing student safety and security at the very top of the priorities list!
