Shepherds Hill Academy (SHA) is a Christ-centered therapeutic boarding school focused on the growth of teenagers and young adults. Managing the various components of such a program can be very complex; from therapy, to wilderness, to academics. With hardworking staff and faculty working throughout the day, self-care is incredibly important. Fortunately, a free yoga class has begun on campus for staff and faculty.
Beginning in January of 2018, Shepherds Hill Academy created a free yoga program for its team members. The program is facilitated and taught by Yoga Psychotherapist, Victoria Nolen. Nolen is also a Girl’s Therapist in the Therapeutic Program at Shepherd’s Hill Academy. Nolen is certified with the credentials of MA (Master of Arts), LAPC (Licensed Associate Professional Counselor), RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher), R-TSYF (Registered Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Faith instructor), and YF-A (Yoga Faith Ambassador).
Nolen not only works to incorporate strength training and balance into her sessions, but also incorporates elements of worship, Scripture reading, and prayer. Nolen hopes that the staff at Shepherds Hill Academy will be able to experience rejuvenation and restoration through, in her words, “true soul-care and self-care in the practice of yoga.” Her desire is to create a safe, welcoming, and sacred space for the staff to unwind, fellowship, move, breathe, connect and belong. As a counselor once told her, “What we are given we are then able to give away.” She further hopes that from their inpouring will come an outpouring into the youth at SHA.
Members of the Therapeutic, Wilderness, Academic and Administrative teams all gather on campus to take part in the yoga sessions at Shepherds Hill Academy. The sessions are held weekly, adding a healthy benefit to the work day.
Director of Marketing, Lane Taylor, commented on the class, “The yoga classes have been incredibly beneficial! The time is great for learning to truly rest and refresh from the stresses of the day. The physical benefits of the practice are very beneficial as well! What a wonderful opportunity for the team members here at SHA!”
Yoga has been proven to reduce stress and inflammation in the body, lower risk of diseases (such as heart disease, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, etc.), increase flexibility, strength and balance, and help restore balance in the nervous system.
Shepherds Hill Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Therapeutic boarding school for teens in crisis between the ages of 12-17.
