There are critical areas in parenting that many overlook.
Today, I’m narrowing down two. Make sure you are not overlooking these two critical areas in your parenting.
Critical Area No. 1 – Set High Standards
Where do your family’s standards come from?
I’m talking about educational, familial, relational, and moral standards.
As successful parents, this should be a high priority. Unfortunately, not many parents stop to consider the importance of adopting standards that transcend cultural norms.
Consequently, they often suffer the same ills common to those found in our increasingly pagan society.
Divorce, unwanted pregnancy, addiction, domestic violence, STD’s, and abortion can needlessly visit our homes when we fail to adhere to proper standards.
These standards are found in the Bible–but not always found in culture or government. Let’s live free of the ills common to a godless society by committing to Scripture for our family’s guide and standard by which to live.
Critical Area No. 2 – Facilitate Teachable Moments
When it comes to teachable moments for our kids, Deuteronomy 6:6-7 comes to mind.
It says: “These commandments that I give to you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
But, do you see a problem here?
In today’s digital age when virtually every waking moment is occupied, how often do we really take the time to unplug and simply sit at home, walk along a road, or lie down with our kids?
Parents, and kids alike, would benefit by taking more time doing these simple little things.
You will be amazed at all the insights, fun, and teachable moments that can come from a simple discussion of the events of an average day.
