Should the average American adolescent have a free choice when it comes to the age they are allowed to date?
But, how old should one be before free choice is really an option?
I’m always astonished by the number of 14 and 15 year olds allowed to date unchaperoned. I’m sure I’ll be accused of being too conservative in this area compared to many others in the church; but, this isn’t wise. The stakes are way too high and the rewards are way too low.
If your teen is infatuated—or even really in love with someone—as a dependent child living under your roof, you are still obligated to protect that child from danger—even if that danger comes from him or herself. You might even consider allowing the Romeo and Juliet duo to hang out at your house in your presence from time to time. If that’s not acceptable with your child, chances are his or her motives and intentions aren’t in the right place.
