Looking for Boot Camps Serving Teens from Lansing, Michigan? Shepherds Hill Academy is a Better Alternative to Boot Camps, though it is Not Located in Lansing, Michigan
First, you need to know that Shepherds Hill Academy is NOT a boot camp, and our program is NOT inexpensive nor short-term. We are a year-long, professionally staffed, therapeutic boarding school, offering a more permanent solution for teens who are struggling. Troubled teen boot camps attempt to reform teen behavior through harsh military-style tactics and drills. These programs last only a short while, usually less than ninety days, similar to a summer camp. Because of their short-term model, boot camps often tend not to achieve lasting results. An adolescent will usually fake compliance just long enough to get out of the program, then go back to his or her former behavior at home in Lansing, Michigan.
Harsh Military-Style Treatment in Boot Camps May Not Be the Best Option for Some Troubled Teens
Boot camps for troubled teens set up strict discipline, inflexible schedules, and demanding physical training to instill self-discipline and respect for authority. Many are designed much like military boot camps, with teens residing in barracks under the supervision of drill instructors and having chores and physical training to perform on a daily basis. This style of boot camp uses intense experiences and shouting, meant to scare teens out of their bad behavior. They generally serve as a last option for an angry, defiant adolescent who is moving toward serious criminal behavior.
Boot camps do not try to deal with the cause of the trouble. They do not offer therapy and do not look for emotional causes. Because of this, boot camps are not suitable for a young adult displaying depression, anxiety, self-harm, low self-esteem, learning disabilities, and other similar behaviors. In these cases, the extremely strict environment can result in more harm than good.
Sometimes Boot Camps are a First Step, Before the Teen Enters a Therapeutic Boarding School
In some cases, a boot camp followed by a therapeutic boarding school or perhaps a residential treatment facility can get better results. For many adolescents, starting with a therapeutic boarding school is a better option for coping with the reasons behind the behavior.
Unlike Boot Camps, Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia Provides Long-Term Results
If strict order is essential, additional options are around. Therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia also give structure to a teen’s life, but they employ a gentler approach focused on long lasting change. These boarding schools commonly keep teens for a year or more, giving adolescents an opportunity to sort out their attitudes and actions and let the better patterns stick. Individual and group therapy sessions help the teen settle issues and take care of whatever was creating the problem, searching for real solutions so the behavior need not return.
A Better Option for Teens in Lansing, Michigan…Shepherds Hill is A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program, a Ranch, a Therapeutic Boarding School, and a First-Class Academy
The early part of a stay at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, designed to remove distractions, build trust and foster teamwork. Living without electricity and other conveniences gives teens an opportunity to contemplate more meaningful issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet simple daily needs calls for coping and teamwork abilities, giving teens good reason to consider their responsibility to others.
Our Residential Program Comes After the Wilderness Program
Once the teens in our care demonstrate responsible decisions and take ownership of their development, they shift to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This phase prepares them to transition into society as privileges and personal freedoms are restored.
We are Also a Fully Accredited Boarding School with Certified Teachers
All throughout the program, teens attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, taught by Georgia certified instructors. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our regular curriculum. Unlike boot camps, Shepherds Hill Academy is designed to equip troubled youth with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of a wilderness program, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family counseling.
Though we are not located in Lansing, Michigan, and we are not a boot camp, we do have students who come to our Georgia campus from all over the country, including from Lansing, Michigan. The distance, and the time away from home is an effective opportunity to bring healing to the entire family. In fact, due to conflicts with friends and local influences, we generally do not accept teens whose families live nearby.
