Looking for Boot Camps Serving Teens from Flint, Michigan? Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a Better Alternative to Boot Camps, though it is Not Located in Flint, Michigan
First, you need to know that Shepherd’s Hill Academy is NOT a boot camp, and our program is NOT inexpensive nor short-term. We are a year-long, professionally staffed, therapeutic boarding school, offering a more permanent solution for teens who are struggling. Troubled teen boot camps strive to reform teen behavior through harsh military-style tactics and drills. Most of these programs last only a short while, usually under 90 days, similar to a summer camp. With their short-term model, boot camps often do not achieve lasting results. A young adult might be able to pretend to comply long enough to leave the program, then return to his or her former behavior at home in Flint, Michigan.
Harsh Military-Style Treatment in Boot Camps May Not Be the Best Option for Some Troubled Teens
Boot camps for troubled teens use firm discipline, regimented schedules, and intense physical activity to instill self-discipline and respect for authority. Many are organized much like military boot camps, with teens residing in barracks underneath the supervision of drill instructors and having chores and physical exercise to perform each day. This form of boot camp uses intense experiences and shouting, meant to scare teens out of their bad behavior. They usually serve as a last-chance measure for an angry, oppositional teen who is headed for serious criminal behavior.
Boot camps do not attempt to address the source of the problem. They do not involve therapy and do not identify emotional causes. Because of this, boot camps are not a good option for a young adult exhibiting depression, anxiety, self-harm, low self-esteem, learning disabilities, and other related behaviors. In such cases, the severe environment can do more harm than good.
Sometimes Boot Camps are a First Step, Before the Teen Enters a Residential Therapeutic Program
Sometimes, a boot camp followed by a therapeutic boarding school or even a residential treatment center can achieve better results. For most teenagers, going straight to a therapeutic boarding school is a better option to help with the reasons behind the behavior.
Unlike Boot Camps, Shepherd’s Hill Academy in Georgia Provides Long-Term Results
If strict order is essential, other choices are out there. Therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherd’s Hill Academy in Georgia also give structure to a teen’s life, however they make use of a gentler approach dedicated to lasting change. These boarding schools commonly last a year or maybe more, giving teenagers an opportunity to sort out their attitudes and behaviors and make the brand new patterns stick. Individual and group therapy sessions help the teen settle issues and cope with whatever was creating the problem, looking for real solutions so that the behavior need not return.
A Better Option for Teens in Flint, Michigan…Shepherd’s Hill is A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program, a Ranch, a Therapeutic Boarding School, and a First-Class Academy
The early part of a stay at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, carefully planned to get rid of distractions, build trust and teach teamwork. Being without technology and other conveniences gives teens an opportunity to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet basic daily needs requires coping and teamwork skills, pushing teens to consider how their contribution impacts others.
Our Residential Program Comes After the Wilderness Program
After residents display responsible choices and take ownership of their development, they transfer to the residential program and move to a home on campus. This next step prepares them to transition into society as privileges and personal freedoms are restored.
We are Also a Fully Accredited Boarding School with Certified Teachers
All throughout the program, teens are enrolled in our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified instructors. We desire students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our regular curriculum.
