Looking for Boot Camps Serving Teens from Chicago Heights, Illinois? Shepherds Hill Academy is a Better Alternative to Boot Camps, though it is Not Located in Chicago Heights, Illinois
First, you need to know that Shepherds Hill Academy is NOT a boot camp, and our program is NOT inexpensive nor short-term. We are a year-long, professionally staffed, therapeutic boarding school, offering a more permanent solution for teens who are struggling. Troubled teen boot camps strive to reform teen behavior through harsh military-style tactics and drills. These programs last only a short time, usually less than three months, similar to a summer camp. Using their short-term model, boot camps often tend not to achieve long lasting results. A teen may be able to fake compliance for the few weeks required to get out of the program, then resume his or her former behavior at home in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
Harsh Military-Style Treatment in Boot Camps May Not Be Appropriate for Some Troubled Teens
Boot camps for troubled teens use strict discipline, rigid schedules, and demanding physical activity to teach self-discipline and respect for authority. Most are designed just like military boot camps, with teens staying in barracks under the supervision of drill instructors and having chores and physical exercise to do on a daily basis. This form of boot camp uses intense experiences and shouting, designed to scare teens out of their inappropriate behavior. They typically serve as a last option for an angry, oppositional adolescent who is headed for serious criminal behavior.
Boot camps do not try to deal with the cause of the issue. They do not offer therapy and can not address emotional causes. For this reason, boot camps are not a good option for a teenager with depression, anxiety, self-harm, low self-esteem, learning disabilities, and other similar behaviors. In these cases, the harsh environment can cause more damage than good.
Sometimes Boot Camps are a First Step, Before the Teen Enters a Residential Therapeutic Program
Sometimes, a boot camp followed by a therapeutic boarding school or possibly a residential treatment center can get better results. For a lot of teens, going straight to a therapeutic boarding school is a more appropriate option for dealing with the causes behind the behavior.
Unlike Boot Camps, Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia Provides Long-Term Results
If strict order is essential, additional options are around. Therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia also give order to a teen’s life, but they use a gentler approach focused on long term change. These boarding schools generally keep teens for a year or maybe more, giving teens the opportunity to work through their attitudes and behaviors and have the better patterns stick. Individual and group therapy sessions help the teen address issues and handle whatever was causing the problem, searching for real solutions so the behavior need not return.
A Better Option for Teens in Chicago Heights, Illinois…Shepherds Hill is A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program, a Ranch, a Therapeutic Boarding School, and a First-Class Academy
The early part of enrollment at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, carefully planned to remove distractions, build trust and foster teamwork. Removing TV, cell phones and other conveniences leaves time to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of collaborating to meet simple daily needs demands coping and teamwork skills, pushing teens to consider their obligation to others.
Our Residential Program Comes After the Wilderness Program
After residents demonstrate responsible choices and take ownership of their growth, they transfer to the residential program and move to a home on campus. This phase gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and personal freedoms are restored.
We are Also a Fully Accredited Boarding School with Certified Teachers
All throughout the program, teens are enrolled in our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified instructors. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also include test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our regular curriculum. Unlike boot camps, Shepherds Hill Academy is structured to equip troubled teens with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of wilderness therapy, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family therapy.

The distance, and the time away from home is an effective opportunity to bring healing to the entire family.
