Looking for Boot Camps Serving Teens from Atlanta, Georgia? Shepherds Hill Academy isn’t a Boot Camp. It is a Better Alternative to Boot Camps, and it is Located Near Atlanta, Georgia
First, you need to know that Shepherds Hill Academy is NOT a boot camp. We are a year-long, professionally staffed, therapeutic boarding school, offering a more permanent solution for teens who are struggling. Troubled teen boot camps strive to reform teen behavior through harsh military-style tactics and drills. Many of these programs last only a short time, usually under 90 days, such as a summer camp. Because of their short-term model, boot camps often will not achieve continuing results. A teenager will usually fake compliance just long enough to leave the program, then resume his or her former behavior at home in Atlanta, Georgia.
Harsh Military-Style Treatment in Boot Camps May Not Be the Best Option for Some Troubled Teens
Boot camps for troubled teens set up firm discipline, regimented schedules, and intense physical activity to teach self-discipline and respect for authority. Most are organized much like military boot camps, with teens staying in barracks with the supervision of drill instructors and having chores and exercises to perform on a daily basis. This kind of boot camp uses intense experiences and shouting, that will scare teens out of their bad behavior. They usually serve as a final option for an angry, oppositional adolescent who is bound for serious criminal behavior.
Boot camps do not try to address the origin of the trouble. They do not use therapy and can not address emotional causes. Because of this, boot camps are not suitable for a teen with depression, anxiety, self-harm, poor self-esteem, learning disabilities, and other similar behaviors. For these teens, the severe environment can cause more harm than good.
Sometimes Boot Camps are a First Step, Before the Teen Enters a Residential Therapeutic Program
Sometimes, a boot camp followed by a therapeutic boarding school or a residential treatment facility can get better results. For many adolescents, starting with a therapeutic boarding school is a more appropriate option for coping with the reasons behind the behavior.
Unlike Boot Camps, Shepherds Hill Academy, near Atlanta Georgia, Provides Long-Term Results
If strict order is essential, additional options are out there. Therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia also give structure to a teen’s life, however they use a gentler approach focused on long lasting change. These boarding schools generally last a year or more, giving adolescents the opportunity to work through their attitudes and behaviors and let the new patterns stick. Individual and group therapy sessions help the teen resolve issues and take care of whatever was causing the problem, seeking real solutions so the behavior does not need to return.

Shepherds Hill is A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program, a Ranch, a Therapeutic Boarding School, and a First-Class Academy
The first phase of life at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, designed to eliminate distractions, build trust and teach teamwork. Living without electricity and other conveniences allows teens to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet simple daily needs requires coping and teamwork skills, pushing teens to consider their obligation to others.
Our Residential Program Comes After the Wilderness Program
After residents demonstrate responsible decisions and take ownership of their growth, they shift to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This phase gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and personal liberties are restored.
We are Also a Fully Accredited Boarding School with Certified Teachers
During both phases of the program, teens attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified teachers. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also incorporate test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our daily curriculum. Unlike boot camps, Shepherds Hill Academy is structured to equip troubled youth with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of a wilderness program, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family counseling.
We are not a boot camp, but we do have students who come to our Georgia campus from all over the country, including from Atlanta, Georgia.
