Looking for Boot Camps Serving Atlanta, Georgia Teens? Shepherds Hill Academy May be a Better Option - boarding schools and wilderness programs for teens.

Looking for Boot Camps Serving Teens from Atlanta, Georgia? Shepherds Hill Academy is a Better Alternative to Boot Camps, though it is Not Located in Atlanta, Georgia

First, you need to know that Shepherds Hill Academy is NOT a boot camp, and our program is NOT inexpensive nor short-term. We are a year-long, professionally staffed, therapeutic boarding school, offering a more permanent solution for teens who are struggling. Troubled teen boot camps strive to reform teen behavior through harsh military-style tactics and drills. Many of these programs last only a short time, usually under 90 days, such as a summer camp. Because of their short-term model, boot camps often will not achieve continuing results. A teenager will usually fake compliance just long enough to leave the program, then resume his or her former behavior at home in Atlanta, Georgia.

Harsh Military-Style Treatment in Boot Camps May Not Be the Best Option for Some Troubled Teens

Boot Camps for Troubled Teens in Atlanta, GeorgiaBoot camps for troubled teens set up firm discipline, regimented schedules, and intense physical activity to teach self-discipline and respect for authority. Most are organized much like military boot camps, with teens staying in barracks with the supervision of drill instructors and having chores and exercises to perform on a daily basis. This kind of boot camp uses intense experiences and shouting, that will scare teens out of their bad behavior. They usually serve as a final option for an angry, oppositional adolescent who is bound for serious criminal behavior.

Boot camps do not try to address the origin of the trouble. They do not use therapy and can not address emotional causes. Because of this, boot camps are not suitable for a teen with depression, anxiety, self-harm, poor self-esteem, learning disabilities, and other similar behaviors. For these teens, the severe environment can cause more harm than good.

Sometimes Boot Camps are a First Step, Before the Teen Enters a Residential Therapeutic Program

Sometimes, a boot camp followed by a therapeutic boarding school or a residential treatment facility can get better results. For many adolescents, starting with a therapeutic boarding school is a more appropriate option for coping with the reasons behind the behavior.

Unlike Boot Camps, Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia Provides Long-Term Results

Boot Camps for Troubled Teens in Atlanta, GeorgiaIf strict order is essential, additional options are out there. Therapeutic boarding schools like Shepherds Hill Academy in Georgia also give structure to a teen’s life, however they use a gentler approach focused on long lasting change. These boarding schools generally last a year or more, giving adolescents the opportunity to work through their attitudes and behaviors and let the new patterns stick. Individual and group therapy sessions help the teen resolve issues and take care of whatever was causing the problem, seeking real solutions so the behavior does not need to return.

A Better Option for Teens in Atlanta, Georgia…Shepherds Hill is A Hybrid Between a Wilderness Program, a Ranch, a Therapeutic Boarding School, and a First-Class Academy

Boot Camps for Troubled Teens in Atlanta, GeorgiaThe first phase of life at Shepherd’s Hill Academy is a wilderness program, designed to eliminate distractions, build trust and teach teamwork. Living without electricity and other conveniences allows teens to contemplate deeper issues of life. The necessity of working together to meet simple daily needs requires coping and teamwork skills, pushing teens to consider their obligation to others.

Our Residential Program Comes After the Wilderness Program

After residents demonstrate responsible decisions and take ownership of their growth, they shift to the residential program and live in a home on campus. This phase gets them ready to transition into society as privileges and personal liberties are restored.

We are Also a Fully Accredited Boarding School with Certified Teachers

During both phases of the program, teens attend our on-campus, fully accredited junior and senior high school, staffed with Georgia certified teachers. We encourage students to get caught up and to also prepare for college, so we also incorporate test prep for the SAT and ACT as part of our daily curriculum. Unlike boot camps, Shepherds Hill Academy is structured to equip troubled youth with the skills needed to become more confident, productive and respectful at home, school, and in the community. We provide a state accredited junior and senior high school on campus. Our unique combination of a wilderness program, certified equine program, and first-class school is all designed to bring focus back into a child’s life. We also utilize accountability groups, individual behavioral and family counseling.

Though we are not located in Atlanta, Georgia, and we are not a boot camp, we do have students who come to our Georgia campus from all over the country, including from Atlanta, Georgia. The distance, and the time away from home is an effective opportunity to bring healing to the entire family. In fact, due to conflicts with friends and local influences, we generally do not accept teens whose families live nearby.

Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County, and a small portion of the city extends eastward into DeKalb County. Residents of the city and its surroundings are known as “Atlantans.” Atlanta began as a settlement located at the intersection of two railroad lines, and it was incorporated in 1845. Today, the city is a major business city and the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States (via highway, railroad, and air), with HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport being the world’s busiest airport since 1998. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Atlanta as an “alpha(-) world city.” With a gross domestic product of US$270 billion, Atlanta’s economy ranks 15th among world cities and sixth in the nation. The city is a center for services, finance, information technology, government, and higher education. Metro Atlanta contains the country’s third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, and is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, Turner Broadcasting, The Home Depot, AT&T Mobility, UPS, and Delta Air Lines. As of 2010, Atlanta is the seventh most visited city in the United States, with over 35 million visitors per year. The city has long been known as a center of black wealth, political power and culture; a cradle of the Civil Rights Movement and home to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. However, the city’s white population is growing rapidly, while Metro Atlanta has quickly become ethnically diverse with large Hispanic and Asian populations. The arts and entertainment are well represented in Atlanta, and the city is an important base for hip hop, gospel, and neo soul music; in addition, it has become a major center of film and TV production. Atlanta stands out among major U.S. cities for its dense tree coverage. In 1996, Atlanta played host to the Summer Olympics, an event that spurred a wave of gentrification that has intensified into the 21st century, revitalizing the city’s center and in-town neighborhoods.
